چکیده
We define new energy momentum surface density and quasilocal mass for the boundary surface of a spacelike region in spacetime. Iso-metric embeddings of such a surface into the Minkowski space are used as reference surfaces in the definition. When the reference surface lies in a flat three-dimensional space slice of the Minkowski space, our expression recovers the Brown-York and Liu-Yau quasilocal mass. Moreover, we prove the positivity of the new quasilocal mass under the dominant energy condition and show that it is zero for surfaces in the Minkowski space.

We study the limit of quasilocal mass defined in [4] and [5] for a family of spacelike 2-surfaces in spacetime. In particular, we show the limit coincides with the ADM mass at spatial infinity. The limit for coordinate spheres of a boosted slice of the Schwarzchild solution is computed explicitly and shown to give the expected energymomentum four-vector. 1 Limit of quasilocal energy 1 2 In [4] ...

This paper presents a complete set of quasilocal densities which describe the stress-energy-momentum content of the gravitational field and which are built with Ashtekar variables. The densities are defined on a two-surface B which bounds a generic spacelike hypersurface Σ of spacetime. The method used to derive the set of quasilocal densities is a Hamilton-Jacobi analysis of a suitable covaria...

The definition of quasi-local mass for a bounded space-like region Ω in space-time is essential in several major unsettled problems in general relativity. The quasi-local mass is expected to be a type of flux integral on the boundary two-surface Σ = ∂Ω and should be independent of whichever space-like region Σ bounds. An important idea which is related to the Hamiltonian formulation of general ...

متن کاملGravitational energy seen by quasilocal observers
There have been many attempts to define quasilocal energy/mass for a spacelike 2-surface in a spacetime by the Hamilton–Jacobi method. The main difficulty in this approach is the subtle choice of the background configuration to be subtracted from the physical Hamiltonian. Quasilocal mass should be positive for general surfaces, but on the other hand should be zero for surfaces in the flat space...
